LACW Scholarships Awarded

The Los Alamos Community Winds announced this year’s scholarship winners for 2024 at their Spring Concert Performance on May 11th, 2024. Our scholarship recognizes graduating LAHS seniors who demonstrate a strong commitment to having a Music-Filled Life by continuing to play instrumental music now and into the future.

LACW’s scholarship winners are:

John Cawkwell: a talented guitarist performing in the LAHS Jazz 1 group, and within the LAHS Jazz Project, where he learned improv. He plans to continue to play throughout his college career as he studies physics at UC Berkeley in California.

Jamie Meana: a talented and versatile musician, playing euphonium, trombone, and piano, while also providing audio/video recording for local musical productions. Jamie plans to study animation at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida.

Anna Miller: an outstanding flutist and the Section Leader for the LAHS Symphonic Band and Marching Band. She plans on continue to play throughout her college career at the University of Idaho as she figures out her major to possibly be music.

Nathan McColloch: percussionist in the LAHS Band, lead drummer for LAHS Jazz 1 and plays in the Jazz Project. Nathan plans to continue to play in college marching and jazz bands, as he studies Criminal Justice and Law at Eastern New Mexico University in New Mexico.

We look forward to hearing how each of these scholars sustain music as they move forward in their next phase of their life.

Seeking Musicians for Holiday Prism Concert

The Los Alamos Community Winds (LACW) announces a call for musicians for its annual Holiday Prism Concert, Saturday Dec. 16, at Crossroads Bible Church.

As many in the community know, this performance is a “concert in the round” where musicians from all backgrounds are invited to join in a celebration of the season. Soloists and small ensemble (chamber) performances are being sought to be presented throughout the concert in a continuous sequence without intermission.

There is also no restriction on the level of player for this event. Student groups as well as any other amateur or professional musicians on any instrument are welcome to participate.

There is no limit on the type of solo or ensemble with the exception of the following:

  • All music must have a holiday (not necessarily Christmas) or seasonal theme; and
  • Each soloist or ensemble’s selection(s) must not exceed 7 minutes in total duration.

If interested in joining this annual event or if there are any questions, contact LACW at info@lacw.org. Use the subject heading “PRISM” in the communication.

Deadline for notification of intent to participate and repertoire selection(s) is Tuesday, Nov. 14.
